Enlisted as a 1st Lieutenant on 15 May 1862 at the age of 32.
Commission in Company G, 63rd Infantry Regiment Virginia on 15 May 1862.
Promoted to Full Captain on 7 Jan 1863.

Company I(2nd), (Captain Giles S. Martin's Co.), was organized January 17, 1863, from 77 men who transferred from Co. G, 63rd. This company was made up of men from Carroll County, Virginia. The company was fortunate in being ordnance train guards at the Battle of Chickamauga. They were supplemented by several men recruited in Carroll County in August 1863, several of which were veterans of other Confederate military organizations. The most complete of the post-war rosters exist for this company.
