Russell was born in Indiana to Casper and Captola Weiss on Oct 7, 1901.

Census records report:

The 1910 census revealed they were living in Nottawa, Saint Joseph, Michigan. They had two sons and two daughters at home.(Russell was one of the sons).

The 1920 census revealed they were living in Elkhart, Elkhart, Indiana. Their youngest two children were still at home.

The 1930 census revealed Russell was a draftsman at a band factory. He was married for three years to Ethel Weiss. Ethel was not working, however census record reveals a Marie Fox was rooming with them that was a telephone operator.

On June 5, 1932, Russell and Ethel welcomed their first son Richard Carlise Weiss into the world. It was shortly after his birth, Russell moved the family to PA. In 1940 a second son David Melvin joined the family. In 1942, the family moved to Wisconsin Dells, WI. At this time there was one other son to join the family-John Paul Weiss in 1944.

When the family moved to WI, Russell purchased a farm in Friendship, WI. Russell and Ethel raised their family there.

In 1948, an unfortunate accident happened to their oldest son that changed them forever. Below is the article written up in Russell's home town newspaper:

Richard Carlisle Weiss, 16 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Weiss, who left Elkhart 12 years ago, was accidently shot wand killed by a playmate Wednesday afternoon in Wisconsin Dells, WI.

Word of the accident was received here by the boys' grandmother, Mrs. Captola Weiss, and aunt, Edith Weiss, of 225 Park avenue. It is tentatively planned that the body will be returned to Elkhart for burial.

The family went to Philadelphia from Elkhart 12 years ago, and moved to Wisconsin Dells in 1942.

Funeral services will be held here for 16 year old Richard Carlisle Weiss, son of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Weiss of Wisconsin Dells, Wis., formerly of Elkhart, who accidently was shot and killed by a playmate Wednesday afternoon, in Wisconsin Dells.

Richard was born June 5, 1932, in Elkhart, the son of Russell M. and Ethel Paul Weiss. The family moved to Philadelphia from Elkhart 12 years ago, and went to WI in 1942. Richard was a sophomore in the Wisconsin Dells High school.

Surviving besides the parents are two brothers, David Melvin, 8, and John Paul, 4; the maternal grandmother, Mrs. Captola Weiss of Elkhart, and 2 aunts and an uncle living in Elkhart, Miss Edith Weiss, and Mrs. Hilma Clements and Frank Weiss.

The body will arrive Sunday morning at the Westbrook funeral home here, where friends may call that afternoon and evening. Funeral services will be held at 10 a. m., Monday at the funeral home, in charge of the Rev. W. W. Kennell of the first EUB church.


After Richard was killed in WI, Russell and Ethel moved with the two other boys to Marble Falls, TX and Port Lavaca, TX. It was for a brief time as they came back to the farm in Wisconsin Dells, WI for the remainder of their days.


In the 1950s Russell was a carpenter and did this until he retired. He was an expert at his craft. He also enjoyed gardening and he was noted for cooking wonderful meals. He lived a peaceful life on his farm and enjoyed his family when he could and was known for being a pretty good story teller to his grandsons.

Russell had 6 grandchildren:

David, Dan, Rod, Chad, Jason, and Celeste Weiss
