On Friday, May 2, a telegram from Chicago announced that Mrs. S. L. Deyo had died that morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Cora Medbury. She had been out of health for many years with a nervous trouble, but eight weeks before the day of her death she was prostrated with a serious attack, and did not leave her bed of Buffering till death came to her relief. Her husband and their three daughters were with her during this last illness and were devoted in their efforts to brighten her last days. On Sunday her remains arrived here, accompanied by Mr. Deyo, two daughters, Mrs. VanHousen and Mrs. Clarke, with their husbands and children. The loved form of the wife, mother and grandmother was taken to the home, which was just as she had left it in the fall, from which on Monday afternoon it was borne to Rose Ridge by ten of her nephews, followed by a long line of sorrowing relatives and friends. Abbie Jane Pierce was born in Naples 61 years ago, one of nine children, six of whom survive her. All made Naples their home. As she grew to womanhood she became the life of her circle. She was noted far and. wide as a beautiful singer and was in great demand to aid in church worship and to entertain in private and public gatherings. In 1853 she married Simeon L. Deyo, and most of the married life has been spent in Naples. Their home was noted for its hospitality, and every visitor was sure to enjoy its cheer. Early in her married life Mrs. Deyo became a member of the Methodist Church and was closely identified with its interests and prosperity. Her kindness and benevolence to the poor was a marked trait in her character, as well as her readiness to assist anyone in trouble. Her three daughters have lived to love and cherish her and care for her in her long affliction, even as she in her strength eared for her aged mother and smoothed her pathway to the grave. The sympathy of the community for the bereaved family was shown by the large attendance at the funeral, and by the sorrow manifested. The casket, loaded with rare and lovely flowers, spoke of deep affection and hallowed memories. The services conducted by Rev. Ward Platt, assisted by Rev B. F. Millard and Rev. F. P. Leach, were impressive and a fitting close to a life of usefulness and Christian faith.
