Annie E. Purcell was first married to Milton Green Dermon. They had four children: Mary (b. 1884), Eva B. (b. 1886), Wade (b. 1893) and Milton Green (Mittie) (b. 1895 d. 1984). Mittie Green was born shortly after the death of her father. Even though she was a girl, she was named after him and given the nickname of Mittie.


Annie's second husband was Nathan M. Shumate. Annie and Nathan married in December, 1896 and their daughter Myrtle was born in 1897. Nathan M. Shumate died in 1899.

Mrs. Annie Shumate died at her late home, near here, Sunday afternoon, after a few days illness. Her remains were laid to rest at Maretburg, Tuesday afternoon, after services by Eld L.N. Bowling. Much sympathy is being expressed for the bereaved ones.

Mrs. Shumate widow of Nathan Shumate is dead in the Brodhead section. She was Miss Annie Purcell, of Rockcastle. She is survived by three children.
