Major John H. Gee was commandant of the Confederate Prison at Salisbury, NC, during the tragic months when a larger percentage of prisoners died from starvation and disease than died at the infamous Andersonville, Ga prison. He was also tried by the federal government but was acquitted. Although, his trial was a major news event at the time with coverage in Northern and Southern newspapers, his story has been omitted from the history of the war. Many well-known historians still proclaim that Wriz was the only commandant ever tried. Major Gee is buried in an unmarked grave.
