Katherine completed the rest of her education in San Angelo and was accepted to the Shannon School of Nursing in 1953. She often shared with her children of the time spent with her best friend, Betty Jean Garner, 'riding bikes and skating all day' in fact; they kept in touch up to Katherine's death.
