Mabel Johnston, 88, Dies; Rites on Wednesday

Mrs. Mabel Knapp Johnston, 88, a long-time resident of Estherville, died at 9:45 a.m. Monday [May 12, 1970] at her home, 17 Alexander Road.

She had been ill for 2 ½ years with generalized arteriosclerosis.

Mable Rebecca Knapp was born Nov. 17, 1881, in Sabula, Jackson County, Iowa, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Knapp. She attended schools in Cedar Rapids and in Estherville. She moved with her family to Estherville in 1893.

She was married Aug. 17, 1905, to Alexander Johnston in the First Presbyterian Church at Estherville. They had one daughter, Virginia, now Mrs. F. R. Everds.

Mrs. Johnson was a member of the Presbyterian Church, the Order of Beauceant, a member and past president of chapter AY of P.E.O., and a member of Okamanpado chapter of D.A.R.

Mr. Johnston died July 7, 1964.

Survivors of Mrs. Johnston are her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. F. R. (Dick) Everds of Estherville; a grandson-in-law and granddaughter, Mr. and Mrs. D. C. (Carolyn) Meyer, and three great-grandchildren, Teddy, Tammy and Tracy Meyer of Humboldt.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 13, at 1:30 p.m. at the Fuhrman Funeral Home in Estherville. The Rev. H. Allen Wirtz will officiate. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Dr. R. P. Bose, Robert A. Cox, Jno. E. Greig, Delbert C. Hinsch, Malverne Moller and Harmon O. Veldey.

Drivers for the family will be Francis T. Shadle and Merle C. Moller. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, May 12, 1970)
