Margaret Jane Whyte, daughter of Rev. Archibald Whyte Jr. and Susan Nancy [née Grier] Whyte, was born in the bounds of Steel Creek A.R.P. on the April 30th 1833; where her father was minister.

Margaret's mother died in December 1834, leaving her father a widower with a young child. Margaret was cared for by her maternal grandmother, Susannah [née Spratt] Grier during her early years.

In 1840, there occurred the separation of the Associate Presbytery of the Carolinas from the Associate Synod on the subject of slavery; causing Reverend Whyte to leave his pastorate at Steel Creek in 1845 and moving to the area around Neely's Creek A.R.P. in York County, South Carolina. Here Rev. Whyte became a planter and entered politics; serving two terms in the South Carolina Legislature.

At the age of 19, Margaret married John Brown Lewis, son of Samuel and Narcissa [née Gaston] Brown, on October 20th 1852. Margaret and John Lewis had one daughter, Susan Grier Lewis. They made their home in the area of Steele Creek Presbyterian church in Charlotte, North Carolina, where Margaret's maternal Grier family lived.

At the time of her death on the 15th of April 1900, Margaret Lewis was living with her duaghter's family in Chester.
