Joel W(illiam?) Burks left home in China Grove, Pike Co., Alabama and went to Texas. It is possible that he went with his brother next to him, Mastin Milton Burks, who went in 1855. He was the son of John Brinkley Burks and 1. Temperence "Tempy" Evans, grandson of William Burks, Jr. and Mary "Polly" Dunston and great-grandson of William Burks, Sr. and Lurena "Lenora" Harris. Joel's other siblings: Wm. Pulaski, Martha Eliz., Temperence, Margaret, Mary, James Brinkley, Frederick, Susan and Jemima Burks.
