Warrant Officer Shorten was one of five airmen killed in the crash of their Wellington (#BK158) aircraft when the aircraft suffered structural failure. It had taken off from RAF Ingham in Lincolnshire and crashed at Skellingthorpe, 2 miles from Lincoln.
The five casualties of this accident were:-
RAFVR Sergeant Archibald McKay CORMACK,
RAFVR Flight Sergeant Terence Federick HOCKLEY,
RAF Sergeant Leslie JOICE,
RCAF Warrant Officer Class II Albert George SHORTEN and
Sergeant Leonard George VAUGHAN.
