May Adams Scherck passed away, Sunday, Dec. 29, 1968 at Memorial Hospital in Wheatland, Wyoming following an extended illness. May I. Sheldon was born January 4, 1890 at Lennox, South Dakota. She came to Casper, Wyoming at the age of 13, and later lived on a ranch near Glendo. In 1930 she was employed by Mountain States Telephone Company as an operator of the Glendo exchange. With the switchboard and office located in her home, she ran the telephone office 24 hours a day for 18 years. While at Glendo she was married to Ernest Adams, who for several years was mayor of Glendo, and who preceded her in death in 1939. With the installation of the telephone dial system at Glendo, Mrs. Adams was transferred to Meeteetse, Wyoming where she was chief operator for seven years before retiring after 25 years of service. She returned to her home at Glendo until her marriage in 1959 to Benard L. Scherck, Sr., Casper realtor and insurance agent. Mr. Scherck succumbed in 1962. Mrs. Scherck was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Cora Schroeder and a daughter, Mabel Hauf, who died in 1927 at age 17. Her survivors include a brother, Wilford Sheldon, Coos Bay, Ore.; a daughter, Mrs. Evelyn Waters of Glendo; two sons, Vern Hauf of Billings and Raymond Hauf of Wheatland; four step-sons, Quin Adams, Glendo; William E. Adams, Austin, Tex., Benard Scherck, Jr., Casper and Buell Scherck of Laramie; two step-daughters, Mrs. Wilma Phoenix, Whittier, Calif. and Mrs. Bernadene Reed of Casper. Nine grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and 9 step-grandchildren also survive.
