Ebenezer served in the 56th Virginia militia during the John Brown rebellion and voted against secession in 1861. He remained a strong Union loyalist and, at one point during the Civil War, housed a Union general. However, in 1864 Ebenezer suffered $1100 damage in the burning raids.
