Ebenezer was merchant and a farmer near Waterford. He married Cecilia George in 1854 and they had ten children.

Ebenezer served in the 56th Virginia militia during the John Brown rebellion and voted against secession in 1861. He remained a strong Union loyalist and, at one point during the Civil War, housed a Union general. However, in 1864 Ebenezer suffered $1100 damage in the burning raids.
