Irwin Grant Alger was the son of James Irwin Alger and Hester Monroe. He was born in Iowa. His father died when Irwin was 13 leaving him and his brothers to take care of their mother and sister. Irwin and his brother Sherman left Iowa for Lead, South Dakota when silver was discovered there. It was here he met a widow with 5 children, Mary Matilda Cox Criswell. They married in 1891 and headed west to Idaho and Oregon where Mary's family had gone. They had 3 children of their own, Annie Mildred Alger, James Irwin Alger and Hester Naomi "Omie" Alger. He worked as a lumberer and a farmer in OR then settled in ID where he died.
