Son of Zebulon Brush & Susanna Sammis; husband of Cornelia Ketcham; he & Cornelia married on 16 February 1842; early in life, Jonas moved to Brooklyn; "during nearly all his business career [he] was in the produce and commission business and acquired a competence"; in 1847 he & his brother-in-law John Van Wyck formed Brush & Van Wyck, coal merchants; they opened an ice store in 1849 & a feed store in 1850; retired from the flour & feed business in 1869; "a staunch Republican"; active member of the South Presbyterian Church, Brooklyn; bought property near Newburgh, Orange County, N. Y. in 1863
