OBITUARY :
DR. CHARLES IRWIN GRIGGS, professor emeritus of English at Temple University, Philadelphia, died Monday, Oct. 10, 1994, at Twin Oaks Nursing Home, Campbelltown.

Born in 1902 in Blandinsville, Ill., he was the son of the late George A. and Ora (Irwin) Griggs. He lived most of his early life in the Midwest.

Dr. Griggs graduated from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where he received his doctorate in English literature in 1937.

He and his wife, Ruth (Steiner) Griggs, who was originally from Waynesboro, were married in 1929, Mrs. Griggs died in 1986.

In 1930, Dr. Griggs was awarded a fellowship for study at the University of London. Upon their return from England, he and his wife made their home in Madison, and he taught at the university.

He joined the faculty of Temple University in 1937 as a member of the English department. He served as chairman of fresman English for several years and was the auyhor of a number of articles and textbooks.

While teaching at Temple, Dr. Griggs and his family lived in Gladwyne.

He served as national president of the College Conference on Composition and Communication, was a member of the Modern Language Association, the American Association of University Professors and was one of the founding members of its Pennsylvania division. He also was a member of the Sierra Club and the Waynesboro Country Club.

After retiring from Temple in 1969, Dr. Griggs and his wife lived on the coast of Maine, near Permaquid Point and Damariscotta, where they had a summer home since 1955. In 1983, they moved into the independent living units at Quincy United Methodist Home.

Dr. Griggs is survived by one son, Jonathan I. Griggs of Hershey, four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Private memorial services will be held at the convenience of the family.

There will be no public viewing, however the family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday in Grove Funeral Home, Waynesboro.

The family request the omission of flowers.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Waynesboro Historical Society, 138 W. Main St., Waynesboro, Pa. 17268.
