Businessman, social reformer. He was born on the island of Curucao of African, Dutch and Jewish heritage, and came to Salem when he was ten years old. He prospered in the city with his wife, Nancy Lenox, as a hairdresser and caterer. They were genuinely respected in the community, but left Salem when two of their children were denied admission to the city's high school based on race. They removed to Rhode Island, but he helped mount a campaign to desegregate Salem's schools. His goal accomplished, he returned to the city. He was the father of abolitionists Charles Lenox Remond and Sarah Parker Remond.
