Eldon Heimbigner, 93, longtime Ephrata resident, died Feb. 23, 2008, surrounded by his family at the Columbia Basin Hospital Ephrata. Born Nov. 7, 1914, to Jacob and Lydia Heimbigner, he was the oldest of seven sibling. He grew up in the Adams-Lincoln county line area. At the age of 14 he moved in with his Uncle David Weber, and worked on his farm near Odessa. Mr. Heimbigner was a natural athlete who excelled in baseball, bowling and ice hockey. The Marlin, Odessa baseball team, he was on won two stte championships. He also umpired. He loved fishing and hunting.
He married Ruth Arlt in 1940, they lived in Odessa. In 1943 he accepted his country call to arms. He served during WWII in the 32 Engineering Battalion of the Army before being transferred into the Air Force due to his sharp shooting skill. From England he sailed to Iceland on the Empress of Russia, which came under attack by German subs. He served three and a half years in Keflavik, Iceland.
He returned to Odessa and established himself with the Odessa Union Warehouse Co-op. He ws assigned as manager of the new plant office in Ephrata in 1955 and remained until retirement in 1984. He was an active member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. Life member of "Two Springs and "Adrian" Granges, the Odessa Fire Department, Masonic Lodge of Odessa and the Allied Masonic Club of Iceland. He was active in the Odessa Gun Club, Washington St. Grain Dealers and Veterans of Foreign Wars, serving as Post Commander for years and also State Service Officer. He belonged to both Soap Lake and Ephrata Senior Centers and drove the People for People van. Eldon was also active in AA and assited dozens of people getting free from drug and alcohol additctions.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth; brothers, Walt, Ivan and Martin; sisters, Jane Davis, Selma Telecky and Perry Ahren; and daughter Lydia Ruth. (Surviving family omitted for privacy)
