Peter Uzelac, 83, a lifelong resident of East Moline, passed away Saturday, April 15, 2000, at Trinity Medical Center, Rock Island.
Visiting hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Van Hoe Funeral Home, followed by interment in National Cemetery, Arsenal Island.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society.
A World War II veteran, Pete served in the 608th OBAM Army Ordnance Division with the John Deere Battalion and received his honorable discharge in January 1946. He continued to be active with the battalion by helping organize many reunions for the surviving members and had been working on the next one to be held this coming August.
Also, he was a member of American Legion Post 227 in East Moline for 50 years.
Well-known for years in the golfing arena, Pete was a winner of every major golf title in the Quad-Cities area. He was the Quad-Cities area champion in 1938, 1939, 1940 and 1946. In addition, he was a seven-time winner of the Saukie championship, five-time East Moline City champion, four-time Indian Bluff Club championship winner, and won the Blackhawk Hills tournament twice. As a member of the Short Hills Velie Cup Matches and Blackhawk Hills teams before the war, Pete collected 11 sterling silver cups for leading these teams in scoring or points garnered.
He was a charter member of Mill Creek Country Club (now Pinnacle) and served as its third president in 1968. He, along with Roy Gillen and many of the original members, helped lay out the design and build the course.
He was a member of the International Association of Machinists (IAM 191) and retired from John Deere Harvester in 1981 following 46 years of service.
Pete is survived by his loving wife, Eva (Van Beveren); their children (and spouses) Steve (Angie) of Silvis and Bonnie (Bill) Moore of Libertyville, Ill.; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a brother (and spouse), George (Rose) of Carbon Cliff.
