John Woodman settled at Fryeburg, Maine with his parents in 1825 but soon after removed to Sweden, Maine where he was later married.
He resided in Sweden for most of his adult life. In religion he was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church; in politics, a member of the Whig party until the mid 1850's when he became an early supporter of the recently organized Republican party.
He was a Captain of Militia at Sweden and active in all public affairs.
The grandfather of Sarah Woodman, John's wife, was Joshua Gammage of Fryeburg who came from Scotland in the mid 1700's and fought with the colonialists at Bunker Hill
and served with the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War.
