Isabelle W. Gowen, age 87 years, of 907
Duck Pond Road, died Friday at a Portland retirement home after a brief illness.
She attended Windham schools where she received a degree in home economics from
the Farmington Normal School.
In early years, she was a custodian at the Highland Lake Grade School, and was a substitute teacher at the Brick Grammar School at Pride's Corner.
She was a director of the Westbrook School Lunch Program from its inception in 1950 until retiring in 1974. She was also a dietitian and manager of food service for the Westbrook Community Hospital from its opening until her retirement in 1976.
She was an excellent cook, and sold home baked beans, doughnuts and bread from her home to people traveling Duck Pond Road to their camps.
She was a leader of the Highland Lake Victory Workers 4-H Club; a former member of the Cumberland County Extension service; a 60-year member of the Evangeline Chapter, O.E.S., of Windham and served as matron in 1942.
For 66 years, she was a member of the Highland Lake Grange and served as ceres, flora, lecture, and, was a gleaner in the fourth degree.
She was a member of the Highland Lake Congregational Church, serving as church clerk for 49 years; was superintendent of the Sunday School for 25 years; was a member of the church council and guild, and was presently historian of the church.
Interment in Highland Lake Cemetery.
