Doris Marie Saunders 1915 ~ 2004 Doris Marie Saunders, wife of deceased Harold H. Saunders, slipped away peacefully in her beloved home at 3:40 p.m. on May 11, 2004. All who cared for her were touched by her loving gratitude and charitable nature. Doris Marie Saunders guided her children humbly and meekly with faith, inspiration and tolerance. Her happiest role in life was that of a supportive wife and mother. She was born at home in Layton, Davis, Utah, April 17, 1915 as the third child to Delbert Munson Ellison and Isabell Corbridge. She had two sisters and two brothers. She grew up in a beautiful two story home her father built in Layton, Utah. In 1925 they moved to a dairy farm in South Weber, where she worked and played with her family. She often related lessons learned while doing chores, riding horses and fixing meals for hired hands during harvest times. As a result of the depression, the family lost the dairy, where the McKay Dee Hospital now stands. She worked as a nanny, part-time with Woolworth's till she graduated from Weber County High School in 1934, at which time she obtained employment as a clerk with the Emporium. Doris and Harold were married March 31, 1938 in the Salt Lake Temple. They made their home in South Ogden till 1946 when they moved to Vale, Oregon. Doris loved music enough to teach herself how to play the piano and organ and loved to accompany her husband in his many singing engagements. She taught early morning seminary, Sunday School, and, with her husband, served two missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They also worked together in the Boise temple for 10 years. The family knew that, with mother's prayers, any challenge would be surmountable. She taught her children while working one on one how to succeed joyfully in life. Each was taught in a way they could relate to. This was no small task while raising engineers, teachers, businessmen, farmers, and even a tax attorney under the same roof. Doris could make things stretch further than most, while still sharing it with so many. She had the self discipline to make a treat last till the next rainy day, yet never wasting anything. She had hoped for more daughters, however once her seven sons arrived, she was grateful for them. The blessing of daughters soon came however when she gained seven wonderful daughters-in-law. At her passing she enjoyed 60 grandchildren and 63 great-grandchildren and dedicated her life to helping teach and support them in their endeavors. She lived for family reunions and kept track of each of her descendants' lives. She is survived by her children, Gwen Saunders of Holladay, Utah; Larry (Ruth) and David (Lexine) of Rexburg, Idaho; Dell (Valeria) of Arlington, Virginia; Blain of Veyo, Utah; Don (Shauna) of Boise, Idaho; Lloyd (Sue) and Rex (Debbie) of Vale, Oregon. Two younger siblings and four sisters-in-law, Don Ellison (Afton ) of Boise, Idaho; Della Orrock of Ogden, Utah; Anita Ellison of Santa Rosa, California; Fern Cox (Soren) of Provo, Utah; and Ray Preston (Mervin) of The Dalles, Oregon. She was preceded in death by her husband; one daughter-in-law, Lynnette Saunders; one grandson, Brent Saunders; and one great-granddaughter, Emily Ardith Saunders. The family wishes to thank the staff and nurses of Pathway Hospice of Ontario for the care given to Doris. A viewing will be held Sunday, May 16, at 7-9 p.m. and Monday at 9 a.m. prior to the funeral at 10 a.m. at the Vale LDS Church. Interment will follow at 7 p.m., May 17, in Altorest Memorial Park in Ogden, Utah.
