Willard Bunger Killed


Pvt. Willard Bunger, 36, related to a number of local people, was killed in action in Germany on February 28, according to notification received from the war department by his wife, Mrs. Twila Bunger, a resident of Glen Karn. He was buried in a military cemetery in Holland.


Pvt. Bunger was wounded in January 8 and confined to a field hospital for three weeks, after which he returned to front-line duty. He had been in the army about a year and overseas since last September.


Other than his wife, survivors include three children, Ruth Ann, 13, Shirley Mae, 8, and James, 3; one sister, Mrs. Archie Lacey, Arcanum, and three brothers, Staff Sgt. Harold Bunger, in the Phillippines, Herschel of Arcanum, and Chester of Greenville. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Bunger. The father spent his boyhood in this community and the mother, whose maiden name was Tamplin, lived at West Manchester years ago.


Willard was the nephew of Mrs. George Bower and the first cousin of Mrs. C.L. Waltman, O.C. and Nevin Bunger and Mrs. Goldie Foster, all of this place.

Rites Saturday For

Pfc. Willard Bunger


Funeral services were conducted at Arcanum Saturday afternoon for Pfc. Willard Bunger and were in charge of Rev. Clyde Jones, pastor of the Arcanum EUB church. Burial was in Ithaca cemetery.


Pfc. Bunger, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Bunger, who resided here for a time during their early married life, was 36 years old when killed in action in Germany on Feb. 28, 1945. He formerly lived in Arcanum.


Surviving are his widow, Twila, and three children, of near Hollandburg; three brothers, Harold, RR4, Greenville, Chester of Bradford, and Herschel of Arcanum, and one sister, Mrs. Hester Lacey, of Arcanum.


Relatives residing here include an aunt, Mrs. George Brower and four first cousins, Mrs. C.L. Waltman, O.C. Bunger, Nevin Bunger, and Mrs. Joe Foster, sr.

The War Department has notified Mrs. Twila Bunger of Glen Karn, that her husband, Pvt. Willard Bunger, 36, was killed in action in Germany on February 28. She was further notified that military burial services had been conducted at an army cemetery in Holland. Pvt. Bunger, who had been overseas since last September, was slightly wounded on January 8, but had rejoined his company after three weeks hospitalization.
