Tory politician and political philosopher. Friend of Jonathan Swift. Went to France at accession of Geroge I and supported the Pretender. Returned to England 1725 where he was visited by his friend Voltaire, who dedicated to him his play 'Brutus'. Some of Bolingbroke's ideas were adopted by Alexander Pope in the latter's 'Essay on Man'. His major political work was 'The Idea of a Patriot King' (1738). His monument, with medallions of himself and his second wife Marie, was designed by Roubillac.
