Griswold Couple Celebrates 68th Anniversary
March 22, 1947

Griswold - Mr. and Mrs. George M. Barnes today are celebrating their 68th wedding anniversary. They were married Mar. 22, 1879, at Three Oaks, Mich., and came here the following fall making their trip in a covered wagon and arriving here Oct. 15. Griswold was then just another corn field but soon afterward the building of the town started. Mr. and Mrs. Barnes located on a piece of land 5 miles northwest of town and at no time have they lived more than five miles from the place they located on. After he quit farming Mr. Barnes was employed in the C.P. Meredith store. They now reside in their home in mid-Griswold and because of their age, and not being able to live alone, they have for their companion Mrs. Margaret Brown. Their daughter, Mrs. Harry Cable, and son, G.K. Barnes of Griswold, help keep an eye on their parents. Their other two sons, Gordon of Greeley, Colo., and Garlie R. of New Hampton, visit them at least once a year.

The observance this year is a family dinner at the Cable home. Mrs. Barnes celebrated his 90th birthday March 7. Mrs. Barnes is 86.
