He was born June 30, 1911, in Stuarts Draft, a son of the late Isaac F. and Mary Alice Whitesell Fitzgerald.
Mr. Fitzgerald was a member of Sherando United Methodist CHurch and retired in 1981 from the City of Waynesboro as a sanitary engineer.
He was an avid gardener and enjoyed small engine repair after his retirement.
He was a tender caregiver and a father figure to many in his family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Rusmisel Fitzgerald, in 1994; two brothers, Gilbert Fitzgerald and Robert Fitzgerald; and two sisters, Mattie Gilmer and Virignia Hite.
Survivors include one brother, Franklin Fitzgerald of Stuarts Draft; and a number of nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind special friends, Barry and Sarah Robertson of Stuarts Draft.
A service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sherando United Methodist Church by the Rev. William Freeman with burial following at Augusta Memorial Park.
Active pallbearers will be Rodney Johnson, Raymond Lunsford, Jack Robertson, Warren Hatter, Barry Robertson and J. C. Snead.
Honorary pallbearers will be Carl Almarode, Ed Clements, church members, nieces and nephews attending the service.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at Reynolds Funeral Service of Waynesboro.
