Mr. Virgil L Adkins, age 92, of 118 Sagewood Drive, Rome, GA, died Saturday, January 14, 2006, at his residence.

Mr. Adkins was born in Pike County, Kentucky on May 31, 1913, the son of the late Alex and Angie Moore Adkins. He attended West Rome Baptist Church and was a member of American Society of Baking. Mr. Adkins lived in Atlanta, GA and moved to Kansas City, MO then to Chattanooga, TN. He has lived in Rome for the last 15 years.

He retired from Cargill in Chattanooga, TN as the director of research and development and prior worked at Seaboard Allied Milling/Cargill. He was a member of Nall Avenue Baptist Church in Kansas where he served as a deacon. Mr. Adkins was a professional baker and was known as Doc. He enjoyed making fruit cakes and making bread.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Adkins is preceded in death by a daughter, Billie Ruth Adkins Bucy in 1960; two brothers, Curtis and Acey Adkins; and a sister, Eva Legg.

Mr. Adkins is survived by his wife of 71 years, Lucille Maynard Adkins of Rome, GA; one son and daughter-in-law, James G. Adkins, Sr. and Betty Adkins of Tucker, GA; one daughter and son-in-law, Brenda Payne and Randy Payne, Sr. of Rome, GA; five grandchildren, J. Grant Adkins, Jr. of Ohio; Alan Scott Adkins of Cumming, GA, Jeffrey Lance Adkins of Alpharetta, GA, Jennifer Ann Waugh of Newark, Delaware, and Randy Payne, Jr. of Savannah, GA; 7 great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Clarence Adkins of West Virginia and Tommy Adkins of Ohio. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 17, 2006, at 1 P.M. in the Oaknoll Chapel of the Jennings Funeral Home with the Rev. Ken Oates officiating. Interment will follow in Floral Hills Memory Gardens in Tucker, GA at 4 P.M. on Tuesday.

Mr. Adkins will remain in the Oaknoll Chapel of the Jennings Funeral Home where the family will receive friends Monday from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M.

Flowers will be accepted or please make memorial contributions to the Gideons of Rome, P.O. Box 3041, Rome, GA 30164-3041.

The following gentlemen will be serving as active pallbearers and are requested to meet in the Oaknoll Chapel of the Jennings Funeral Home by 12:30 PM on Tuesday: Norwood Bailey, Randy Payne, Jr., Lance Adkins, Scott Adkins, Taylor Adkins, Brian Walker, and Grant Adkins. The Honorary pallbearers will be Bob Bucy and the Wilkens Bible Sunday School Class.
