She was the daughter of Arshag and Varteni Der Avedisian. A survivor of the Armenian Genocide of 1915 in which she lost both her parents, she escaped and lived with her sisters in an orphanage in the Middle East. They were brought by a relative to America. Satenig later married Dickran Semerjian and they had two daughters Clara and Rose. Clara married and gave them two grandchildren.
