William's death certificate lists his birth place as Nassau, Germany, and as the son of Henry Merz (mother unknown).

Note on surname: The family seems to have changed the spelling of the surname after arrival in Texas. William and and wife Louisa continued to spell it Merz, while most of their children seem to have adopted the Mertz spelling.
