M'CRARY IS CALLED HOME: Confederate Veteran and Wel[l] Known Citizen Answers His Last Roll Call. // Mr. Alfred Green McCRARY, one of Columbus' oldest and most highly respected citizens, passed away at his home, 1938 [?] Hamilton avenue, last night at 5 o'clock, after an illness of several months of old age and general debility. Mr. McCRARY had been confined to his bed for about six weeks. // The deceased was 70 years of age and had spent practically all of his life in Columbus, being held in esteem by many friends. Until about fifteen years ago he was engaged in farming. // Mr. McCRARY was a faithful member of the Rose Hill Methodist church. // He was a veteran of the civil war, having entered the Confederate army when quite a young man, and during the long struggle made a gallant soldier in the service of the south. He served throughout the entire four years. // The following children survive him: Mrs. C[harles] W. MIZELL, Mrs. W. F. SULLIVAN, Mrs. E. A. MURRAY, Miss Eva McCRARY, Messrs. George McCRARY, Walter E. McCRARY, Early McCRARY, and Miss Mollie McCRARY, all of Columbus, and Mr. C. H. McCRARY, whose death occurred Saturday night at his home on Rose Hill, took place from the late residence Sunday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock, bring largely attended by friends and relatives of the deceased. There were many beautiful floral offerings. // The services were conducted by the Rev. W. D. MacGREGOR and the Rev. B. W. BUSSEY in a very impressive manner. Miss BRINSON, Miss SHERIDAN, Miss HOWARD and Mr. Chilton COLEMAN sang "Good Night" and There Is Rest for the Weary." // Interment was in Riverdale cemetery and immediately after the benediction had been prounounced by Rev. BUSSEY, Marion Schley DAVIS, of the Goetius Guards, sounded "Taps," and as the clear notes of the bugle rang out on the afternoon air, they told the story of another hero of Dixie who had gone to his last reward. // The following gentleman acted as pallbearers: Messrs. McCRARY enlisted as a Private 23 SEP 1862 in Company B "Muscogee Confederates" (Muscogee County), 31st Regiment, Georgia Infantry, Evans' Brigade, Gordon's Division, Army of Northern Virginia, CSA. on 15 DEc 1861 he was appointed 1st Lieutenant. Wounded in right knee and captured at Monocacy, MD, on 09 JUL 1864. Exchanged at Point Lookout, MD on 30 OCT 1864. Present at the surrender at Appomattox, VA, on 09 APR 1865. (Born in Muscogee County, GA, in 1839.) Filed in Muscogee County for a pension based on his service.
Also serving in the same unit was W. W. McCRARY (evidently a brother, William Wilson McCRARY): enlisted as a Private 23 SEP 1862. Captured at Spotsylvania, VA, on 12 MAY 1864. Paroled at Fort Delaware, DE, for exchanged on FEB 1865. No further record.
