Edgar Hazzard, Business Leader, Succumbs at 72.
Lake Charles, La., Dec. 25---Funeral services for Edgar Norris Hazzard, 72 years old, widely known business man who died today at St. Patrick's hospital will be held Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the family residence, 431 Kirby street. The Rev. C. W. Rodgers, pastor of the Simpson Methodist church, of which Mr. Hazzard was a member, will officiate, assisted by the Rev. George B. Mines, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, and the Rev. E. S. Yockey, retired. Mr. Hazzard, who was born in Monticello, Ill, in 1867, came to Lake Charles in 1895. After several years in clerical work with business firms, including the Lake Charles American newspaper and the Kansas City and Gulf railroad, then known as the Watkins Line, he entered the employ of the Calcasieu National Bank in 1900 as bookkeeper. After successive promotions to teller, cashier, superintendent of branch banking and auditor he became a director and vice-president of the bank from which positions he retired in 1933. While he was with the Lake Charles American he brought about the merger of that newspaper with the Lake Charles Press to form the American Press.He was a member of the Association of Commerce and had an important part in securing an agricultural agent for Calcasieu parish. Mr. Hazzard is survived by his widow, the former Miss Sarah Myrtle Kirkpatrick; a brother, Charles Hazzard of Los Angeles, Cal., and a sister, Mrs. William Ream of Peoria, Ill.
