Paul Wilborn Grove was born March 28, 1923, in Shawnee. He was the son of Benjamin H. and Bertha V. (Nicholas) Grove. He attended Grove School (which was named after his grandfather, James Harvey Grove) and later Shawnee High School. He served a short while in the United States Army, spending much of that time in a military hospital. On Aug. 24, 1943, he married Darlene Slaymaker. They were married over 65 years before her death in 2009.
Mr. Grove worked in the oil field for many years in Texas and Louisiana. He later went to work at Tinker Field where he retired in 1980. After retirement, he became a full-time rancher, raising various animals such as horses, cattle and fighting roosters.
In 2004 he moved into town but kept his farm. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, teaching them to be ornery, he could tell a good "story," and he was the self-proclaimed mayor of Chisney.
He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers: Clyde and Harry and one sister, Bonnie Anderson.
He is survived by two daughters, Linda Block and husband David of Tecumseh and Marla Williams and husband Ed of Shawnee; four grandchildren, Jason Block of Owasso, John Block and wife Megan of Edmond, Steven Williams of Austin and Amanda Siebert and husband Matthew of Oklahoma City; four great-grandchildren, Noah, Hannah, Henry and Lily and numerous nieces, nephews and other family and friends and his tailless cat named Bob.
Services will take place 2 p.m., Friday, Sept. 17, 2010, at Walker Funeral Service Chapel with David Anderson officiating. Burial will take place Resthaven Memorial Park.
