DR. WAKEFIELD'S FUNERAL TODAY

Prominent Oculist, Said to Have Been First in State, Dies at Home.

Funeral services for Dr. William Haines Wakefield, 73, prominent Charlotte citizen, who died at his home, 1800 East Fourth street, yesterday morning after an illness lasting seven weeks, will be conducted at the residence at 11 o'clock this morning.

Dr. James F. Hardie, pastor of the Second Presbyterian church, will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery.

Serving as active pallbearers will be Dr. L. B. Newell, Dr. R. M. Gallant, Dr. J. L. Ranson, T. M. Abbott, Fred Anderson and William A. Ward. Among honorary pallbearers will be Dr. C. M. Strong, Dr. J. R. Irwin, Dr. William Allan, Dr. R. H. Lafferty, James T. Porter, M. F. Trotter, Sr., Dr. W. O. Nisbet and John B. Ross.

Dr. Wakefield, son of Henry Wakefield and Ann Haines Wakefield, was born in Arkell, Ontario, Canada, on November 19, 1855. He married Miss Mary C. Adams of Greensboro November 23, 1881.

In 1895 he moved to Charlotte, where he became a practicing occulist, said to have been the first in the state. He retired from active practice in 1924 and went into the floral business. He was an elder in the Second Presbyterian church.

SURVIVORS.
Dr. Wakefield is survived by his widow; three sons, Dr. H. A. Wakefield, Archie Wakefield, and Dr. Robert F. Wakefield, all of Charlotte; three daughters, Mrs. L. M. Ham of Greensboro, Mrs. E. R. Smith and Mrs. O. L. Stevens of Charlotte; the following grandchildren: L. M. Ham, Jr., William W. Ham, Irwin Ham and Robert Ham of Greensboro; Wakefield Smith, Robin Smith, Stewart Smith, Mary Elizabeth Wakefield, Harry A. Wakefield, Sarah Frances Wakefield, Archie Wakefield, Jr., Oliver Stephens, Jr., and Barbara Stevens of Charlotte, and one great grandchild, L. M. Ham, III. Two brothers and four sisters also survive. They are Thomas Wakefield of Guilford, George Wakefield of Virginia, Mrs. G. Will Armfield of Greensboro, Mrs. Nell Brown of Greensboro, Mrs. Alice Stewart and Mrs. Jane McKnight of Guilford.

Members of the Mecklenburg county medical society have been asked to gather at the home at 11 o'clock to attend the funeral in a body.
