Mrs. Lewis, EUCOM Grannie To Be Buried Tomorrow

Funeral services will be held tomorrow for Mrs. Mary Catherine Lewis, 94 year old grandmother who made the headlines two years ago (1951 article in Baltimore Sun Paper) when she flew to Germany to join her youngest daughter and army officer son-in-law.

At that time, Mrs. Lewis was described as the oldest American woman living in Germany and fellow Americans at Munich called her "EUCOM Grannie" Europe Command grandmother. She lived there with her daughter and son-in-law, Lt. Col. And Mrs. Christian Claypoole.

Mrs. Lewis died yesterday morning in a nursing home in Catonsville which she had entered two weeks ago. Services will be held from the Leonard J. Ruck Funeral establishment, 5305 Harford Road tomorrow at 2 p.m. burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery.

Maryland Native
A native of Maryland was born two years before Abraham Lincoln was elected to the presidency.

Mrs. Lewis returned from Germany last September 11. She had been living with Mrs. Claypoole at 908 Northern Parkway until she was placed in the nursing home.

One of her greatest pleasures was drinking beer. She drank it on doctor's orders and no member of her family including her great-grandchildren can remember her ever having drunk water. When she made the flying trip to Germany a special permit had to be obtained so that she could have her quota of beer on the plane.

Mrs. Lewis is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Ida Myers, Mrs. Martha Claypoole, and Mrs. Jack Frost, all of Baltimore and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
