Mary Lou Coffey was the youngest of four children born to John William Coffey (1869-1960) and his wife Frances Elizabeth Little Coffey (1878-1967) of Raleigh, NC. Her father was a prominent contractor in Raleigh. Mary Lou grew up in the Boylan Heights neighborhood of Raleigh. She attended St. Mary's School in Raleigh and the NC College for Women in Greensboro. She made her debut at the 1927 Debutante Ball in Raleigh. Something of a flapper in her early adulthood, Mary Lou never lost her joy in people.

On April 3, 1937 Mary Lou married Robert Lee "Bob" Miller (1907-1954) in Raleigh. Miller held a position with the NC State Banking Department. The couple later moved to Richmond, VA where Bob worked at the Federal Reserve Bank. In 1951 the family returned to North Carolina when Bob accepted the position of executive vice president of the Richmond County Bank in Rockingham, NC. In 1949, the couple adopted a daughter.

After the untimely death of her husband in 1954, Mary Lou moved back to Raleigh where she lived quietly and raised her daughter and later helped raise her granddaughters. She succumbed to cancer at age 74.
