Darrell was born in Waco, Texas, to James Laurinza Austin and Jimmie Lorraine Smith-Austin. Before graduating from O.D. Wyatt High School in Ft. Worth in 1981, he won an All-State Championship track and field award and received a full academic and athletic scholarship to Texas A&M, where he ran track, played football, and was a member of the Cotton Bowl Championship team of 1985, the year he graduated.
After college, Darrell's love of children led him to work for the Hayes County Juvenile Probation Center in San Marcos. He served youth throughout Central Texas and was the Director of the Hayes County Juvenile Probation Center at the time of his passing. Darrell was a loving husband, dedicated father, and also an active member of his church.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Jimmie Lorraine Smith-Austin.
He is survived by his wife, Sharrian Austin; sons, Brandon and Cameron Austin, of Kyle, and Addison Austin and wife, Amanda, of San Diego, Calif.; daughter, Ashley Carpenter, of Ft. Worth; his father, James L. Austin and wife, Adressia, of Ft. Worth; brothers, Edgar L. Austin and Adrian Austin; sister, Vanessa Wesson and husband, Don, all of Ft. Worth; aunts: Helen S. Bailey, Susan Smith, Eula Smith, and Gloria Smith, all of Waco, and Carolyn Smith, of Amarillo; uncles, Bobby Smith, of Waco, and Charles Smith, of Lake Charles, La.; and his great-aunt, Frances McDade, of Dallas; other relatives and many friends.
