Ada Emert - SEYMOUR

SEYMOUR — Ada Ethel Garland Emert, age 96, of Seymour, Tennessee, passed away on Tuesday, September 28, 2010.

She was born in Shady Valley, Tennessee, on May 23, 1914, to the late J.G. and Catherine (Brown) Garland. In addition to her parents, Ada was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred C. Emert; and several siblings: Stella Moorehouse, Trula Shoun, Eveylyn Robinson, Mamie Bishop, Cecil Shoun, Ora Nelson, Homer Garland and Chase Garland.

Ada attended State Teachers College of Johnson City, Tennessee, and received her B.S. Degree from UT of Knoxville. She was the home demonstration agent in Sevier County for four years.

In 1943, she married 1st Lt. Alfred C. Emert, a native of Ione, Oregon, and moved to a farm in Seymour, Tennessee. In 1944, while serving in WWII as an Air Force Officer, Alfred was shot down over France. A month later, his and Ada's daughter, Alfreda, was born.

Ada was an exceptional teacher, who first taught in a one room school house in Crandell, Tennessee, taught in Shady Valley, Tennessee, and Kingsport, Tennessee, and had taught for 24 years at Flannigan Elementary of Knox City Schools, Tennessee; it was during this time in her career that she received the Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award for the City Of Knoxville.

Ada is survived by her daughter, Alfreda Porter and husband, Don, of Hendersonville, Tennessee; her two granddaughters: Melinda Porter, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Sherrie Hurt and husband, John Hurt, and their son, John Porter Hurt, of Gallatin, Tennessee; brother, Fred Garland and wife, Izetta, of Shady Valley, Tennessee; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 2, 2010, at the Harmon Chapel Christian Church of Shady Valley, Tennessee, with the funeral service to follow at 2:00 p.m. with Howard Taylor, Minister, to officiate. Music will be under the direction of the Long Family.

Graveside Service and Interment will follow from the Gentry Cemetery (Shady Valley Memorial Gardens). Pallbearers will be family and friends.

At other times, the family will receive friends at the home of Joe and Whanita Medina, 1580 Hwy 133, Shady Valley, TN 37688.
