He was born in La Plata, Missouri to John Wesley Meeks and Golda (Goldie) Martha Lewis Meeks. Gene was raised by his maternal grandparents after his mother died of complications of the 1919 influenza. He had residence in La Plata with those grandparents until 1938.
Gene had many talents- anything he put his mind to he would succeed at. He learned barbering and how to play drums from his dad. He had his own band that toured the U.S.in the 1930's. He worked on the pipeline, was a self-taught auto mechanic but his occupation was a road engineer for Santa Fe Railroad from July 1942 to October 1972, driving freight trains.
He married Anna Hortense Ayers (born 1919, daughter of Grover and Ola Ayers) of La Plata in December 1938, which ended in a divorce. No children.
He married Esther Viola Violett in Kansas City KS on April 17, 1947. Two children were born to their union.
After Gene's death, Esther moved to Apache Junction, Arizona and lived there until her death on January 29, 2015.
