Oscar William Wingate was born to Hans and Helen (Hanson) Wingate, October 12, 1885 on the Wingate homestead just east of Soldier, where he grew to manhood farming with his father. He had three sisters, Ada (Mrs. Ole G. Norby); Hilda (Mrs. Ole C. Hanson) and Lizzie (Mrs. LeRoy Larson.)

He met and married Nettie Rosella Melby, daughter of Christian and Carrie Melby of Moorhead. They were blessed with three children: (1) Harlow (married Marilla Grace McDole), (2) Alice (Mrs. Howard Thoreson) and (3) Nadine (Mrs. Bernard Berens).

Oscar worked in the plumbing and heating business at Carlson Hardware. He put up many windmills on many farms in West central Iowa.

Oscar and Nettie were active in the Soldier Lutheran Church. He served also as Church Trustee, Mayor of Soldier, election board, town council and was a volunteer fireman.

Nettie passed away in June of 1968. Oscar entered Maple Heights Nursing Home in October of 1972 where he passed away in March of 1974.
