Along with his brother, John Irby Chilton, William co-founded the Paragon Press of Alabama, which eventually specialized in publication of university and high school yearbooks.
In November 1904 he married Minnie Harvey Pickett. Their son Wm.Pierce Chilton Jr. attended the U.S. Naval Academy and retired an Admiral.
William Pierce Chilton was the first of several siblings to die of inherited polycystic kidney disease.
