MINERAL WELLS — Melvin R. "Grandpa" Appling, 90, died Sept. 27, 2010, at a Fort Worth hospital.
Memorial service is 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, 2010, at Eleventh Avenue Church, 206 S.W. 11th Ave., in Mineral Wells with pastor Charles Mays and founding pastor R.B. Shiflet officiating.
He was born March 1, 1920, in Bowie, Texas, one of six children to Stanley E. Appling and Lutie Stack Appling. Melvin attended Newberry College, S.C., on a football scholarship while living in Oklahoma, and was recruited for the U.S. Marines 1st Parachute Batallion Paratroopers of World War II Guadacanal Airfield in 1942. A book written about them titled, "Batallion of the Damned," by James F. Christ.
After the war he lived in Scottsdale, Ariz., working, golfing, refereeing football, boxing and college baseball games in New Mexico, Texas and Oklahoma. He returned to Texas as owner and operator of Open Front Foot Store, M System Food Stores and district supervisor of Buddies Store. He served on the hospital board, was a member of Rotary club and sponsored local youth. He was an avid golfer all his life and was one of the first members of Holiday Hills Country Club, playing locally and in state tournaments.
While in the food store business he met and married Betty Warren Smiddy while living in Graford and owner-operator of Kwik Stop-PK stores. He retired from business and became active in the Senior Center and Meals on Wheels while enjoying his family, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many friends in Graford and Mineral Wells.
Everyone knew him as "Grandpa," full of pride and always a big "Texas Smile" for everyone. He was a beloved husband, father, grandpa, great-grandpa, uncle, friend, businessman and sportsman enthusiast.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Warren Appling; daughters, Sue Appling, of Mineral Wells, Patti Roark, of Aledo, Texas, and Deressa Smiddy, of Possum Kingdom; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Two sisters and three brothers precede him in death.
