Dr. Stewart "Pat" Lawwill Jr. died Sunday, September 26, 2010.

He was born May 25, 1927 The son of the late Sue Frierson and Stewart Lawwill Sr.

Dr. Lawwill graduated from McCallie School in 1944, Vanderbilt University 1947 and Vanderbilt University Medical School MD 1950. Dr. Lawwill did a year Internship at Northwestern University Wesley Memorial Hospital Chicago, Post Graduate Course in Ophthalmology at University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati General Hospital Cincinnati, Rotating Fellowship: Department of Ophthalmology, Iowa City, Iowa: Illinois Eye & Ear, Chicago; Wayne University Detroit (Detroit Receiving); Boston Eye & Ear (University of Mass.): Presbyterian Hospital, NYC, Columbia University; and Wilmer Institute, John's Hopkins, Baltimore.

Dr. Lawwill began his practice with his father Dr. Lawwill Sr. in 1955 and he received his American Board of Ophthalmology in October 1955. They practiced together for 10 years after which he was in private practice until he joined Chattanooga Eye Associates which become Chattanooga Vision Center, PLC. During his practice he was a member of: Membre Titular Academie Francais d Ophthalmologie; American Academy of Ophthalmology: American College of Surgeons: Chattanooga & Hamilton County Medical Society; American Medical Association; Tennessee Academy of Ophthalmology: American Intraocular Lens Society, and Tennessee Medical Association.

Dr. Lawwill also served as: Chief: Section of Ophthalmology, Department of Surgery, Erlanger Hospital 1975-1976, Chief: Department of Ophthalmology, Miller Eye Center, Erlanger Hospital 1983, Treasurer: Chattanooga Ophthalmological Foundation 1979-1984, President: Tennessee Academy of Ophthalmology 1976-1977, Secretary: Tennessee Academy of Ophthalmology 1978-80, and Medical Director: Lions Annual Glaucoma Clinic for 20 years.Dr. Lawwill was also instrumental in residency program of Baroness Erlanger Hospital, later University of Tennessee Medical School of Chattanooga. He was proud of the Ophthalmologist and designed the Erlanger Eye Clinic and the Miller Eye Center and purchased most of the equipment with the Chattanooga Ophthalmological Foundation money.

Dr. Lawwill was a member of First-Centenary United Methodist Church, Chattanooga Dahlia Society, and The Chattanooga Kiwanis. He enjoyed computer programming, photography, travel, water sports, and flower arranging.

Dr. Lawwill is survived by his wife of 53 years, Alice Elleanore Harrison Lawwill; son, Dr. Stewart Lawwill III; daughter, Elleanore Harrison Lawwill Feininger; son-in-law, John L. Feininger Jr.; daughter, Mary Margaret Lawwill Murphy; son-in-law, Joseph Patrick Murphy; grandchildren, Mary Alice Murphy, Joseph Patrick Murphy Jr., Michael Stewart Murphy; Elizabeth Sterling Feininger, Harrison Nicole Feininger; and Ansley Elleanore Feininger. He is also survived by his sister, Peggy Lawwill Ballman; and brother, Dr. Ted Lawwill.

Visitation will be one hour before the noon service on Thursday, September 30, 2010, at First-Centenary United Methodist Church, 419 McCallie Ave., Chattanooga, TN 37402.

The family will also receive friends Wednesday, September 29, 2010 from 4-6 p.m. at Wanns Funeral Home.

Burial will follow at Forest Hills Cemetery.
