Glen W. Bishop, 86, passed away at his home on September 24, 2010, after an illness of several months due to liver failure. He was born to Fred P. and Nallie Rutherford Bishop on January 8, 1924 in El Campo, Texas. Being a son of a Methodist minister, Glen grew up all over the state but he spoke most often of his years in Mason.
Mr. Bishop was an engineering student at the University of Texas during WWII and joined the Reserves. He was called up and spent 2 years in the Army Air Corps. While stationed in Illinois, he met Arlene Hess whom he returned to marry on June 1, 1946 after his discharge and brought his bride to Texas. They spent their first year in Austin where Glen continued his studies and Arlene worked as a "beauty operator" or beautician. After the death of an uncle Glen took over the family farm which now has been in the family for 121 years. He and Arlene worked the farm and added a dairy which they operated from 1949 to 1986. In 1987, they started an RV park which Glen built. He learned the business as it grew. His grandson and granddaughter-in-law now managed the park.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 64 years, Arlene; daughters, Mary Ann Joseph and husband Danny of Georgetown and Virginia "Ginger" Mitchell and husband Paul of Florence; sister, Ilene Meier of Austin; grandchildren and step-grandchildren, Glen Ochs and wife April, Becky Ochs and fiancé Carl Britt, Kelli Johnson and husband Richard, Krista Terry and husband Jon; six great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and Adam McDonald. Also important in Glen's life were treasured friends of over 60 years, the Gilbert Birkelbach family and the best possible neighbors, the Bob Wittera family.
He was preceded in death by a brother Fred Alden Bishop and sister Mattie Loeffler.
Faithful to visit him throughout his illness were Dale Lambey, Doc and Anna Aiken, Lucille Byerly and Ishmael Chavez.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Georgetown for 63 years.
Mr. Bishop's interest in woodworking began as a child and carried through into his 70's . He loved to share the beautiful works of his hands. He also enjoyed gardening, making jelly and in later years baking.
Funeral services will be at 3:00 P.M. on Monday, September 27, 2010 at the First United Methodist Church in Georgetown, Texas with Steven Langford and Tom Graves officiating. Burial to follow at Berry's Creek Cemetery in Georgetown, Texas where he will be laid to rest among his parents, grandparents and great-grandparents.
