Silas Atwood and his family moved to Washington, Iowa in 1844 where he grew up. He enlisted in Company K, 13th Iowa Volunteer infantry and served three years and eight months. He participated in the battles at Shiloh, Corinth, and Vicksburg. He also was with Sherman from Atlanta to the sea and from Savannah to Washington. He mustered out at Louisville, Kentucky, in July 1865. He then located on a homestead two and a half miles west of Milford in 1867 and had a part in the county seat war.

Silas Atwood married Dorotha E. Brown, daughter of Samuel Brown of Milford, in 1869. The couple were the parents of four children: Della A., Gilbert C., Amy L., and Cathie P. The family were members of the Methodist church in Beaver Crossing. He was a hard-working citizen for both the towns of Milford and Beaver Crossing, being elected to the Nebraska state legislature in 1902 and 1904.
