George Ray Sexton was born March 9, 1940 and departed this life Sunday, April 24, 2011 reaching the age of 71. He was the son of the late Golie and Mossie (Carrender) Sexton.
He was united in marriage to Shirley Louise Doss on January 29, 1962 and to this union 3 children were born.
He is survived by: 2 sons, Michael Ray (Kimberly) Sexton and Gary Dean Sexton; 1 daughter, Debbie Sexton Vandiver; and 10 grandchildren, Nathan Sexton, Ashley Vandiver, Noel Sexton, Megan Vandiver, Natalie Sexton, Aaron Sexton, Katlyn Gehring, and Michaela Sexton; 3 step grandchildren, Jeremiah, Ben and Sarah Houseman; and 1 great grandchild, Jaylan Sexton. He is also survived by: special companion, Alice Roberts; extended children, Kyla (Kenny) Hicks, Anthony (Penny) Burris, and Eddie (Jamie) Bell; 3 brothers, Leland, Roy, and Charlie Sexton; 2 sisters, Margaret Lee and Wanda Lou Sexton; special caregivers, Jennifer Shelton and Melissa Swift; along with a host of family and friends who mourn his passing.
In addition to his parents, Golie and Mossie Sexton, he was preceded in death by: his wife, Shirley Sexton; 2 grandchildren, Oretta and Louise Houseman-Sexton; 1 great grandchild, Nevaeh Sexton; 6 siblings, Charlie, Jule, Hattie, Zadie, Lee and Jean; 2 sister-in-laws, Wanda Lewis Sexton and Verna Hunley Sexton.
He served in the Army National Guard and often reminisced of his time spend in Germany. He was a UK fan and enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, April 26, 2011 from 4 – 9 pm in the chapel of the funeral home. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at 2pm at the Marvin S. Hicks Funeral Home with Bro. Oral Denney and Bro. Ernest Mann officiating. Burial will be in Elk Spring Cemetery. Full military honors will be performed by DAV Chapter 105.
