As a young girl, Weltha moved to California from Busti NY in 1846, three years before the discovery of gold in CA, to be a school teacher. She married Oscar BABCOCK, brother (or possibly cousin)of her sister's husband, at Moore's Flats, California, June 15, 1860. She died the following year, the day after delivering her first child, a daughter.
News of Weltha's passing was published in the Daily Alta California, Volume 13, Number 4282, 9 November 1861: "At Moore's Flat, Nevada conty [sic], Oct 25th, WELTHA A, wife of Oscar D. Babcock, in the 31st year of her age."
The child survived, and in 1862 Weltha's sister Sophia Nelson Babcock, wife of Edwin Babcock, traveled from western NY to California to get her and take her back to NY state. Sadly, on her return trip, the ship they were on, the Golden Gate, burned and sank six days out of San Francisco, and Sophia and the child, traveling in the 2nd class cabins, both perished.
From a report of the sinking: July 27, 1862: Between San Francisco and Panama, about 15 miles from Manzanillo, Mexico, fire was discovered in the engine room, and the vessel was headed for what is now called Playa de Oro to beach. Many of the passengers sought refuge in the stern, but the flames spread in that direction, and when boats were launched in the heavy surf the occupants were crushed against the ship or drowned; the ship broke up in the surf. Reports of between 175 and 223 passengers and crew lost their lives."
