Mr. Hilt was born in Fremont, June 18, 1932, to Clyde and Lillian (Rider) Hilt. He attended Fireside School and was in the U.S. Army during the Korean War serving as a staff sergeant and earned the Bronze Star.
For 40 years Earl worked at Whirlpool Corp. in the paint department, retiring in 1994. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Clyde, life member of Clyde VFW, life member of the Military Order of Cootie, Clyde Eagles, Green Springs American Legion and Clyde MOOSE.
Survivors include his two sons, Earl Jr. (Linda) Hilt, Clyde, Dennis Michael (Diane) Hilt, Fremont; daughter, Kimberly (Roger) Wright, Clyde; 14 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; three sisters, Sharon Schuetz, Republic, Virginia Kempf, Arizona, and Joyce Clere, Missouri.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary (McAfee) Hilt, whom he married May 30, 1951, and who died Feb. 19, 1989; infant son, Richard E. Hilt; and siblings, Floyd Hilt, Betty Gerstenberger-Slane, Frank Arndt, Cy Miller and Catherine Drown.
Visitation will be 3-6 p.m. Monday in Mitchell-Auxter Funeral Home, 218 S. Main St., Clyde. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home with the Rev. Gerry Gosnell officiating. Burial will be in McPherson Cemetery, Clyde, with military gravesite rites provided by Clyde VFW and American Legion.
