Dr. Neal was born May 11th to Harold and Wilma (Smelser) Neal in Muncie, IN. Allen graduated from Yorktown High School, Yorktown, IN; Indiana University, Bloomington, IN, where he was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa honorary fraternity and graduated with honors in 1978; and Indiana University School of Medicine in 1982. Allen completed his post-graduated training at Ball Memorial Hospitals Family Practice Residency Program from 1982 to 1985 where he also served as Chief Resident. Dr. Neal was in private practice in Daleville, IN from 1985 to 1993. While in practice, Dr. Neal remained active in teaching residents and was named Family Practice Teacher of the Year several times. In 1992, he left to pursue an academic position with Ball Memorial Hospital Family Practice Residency as an Associate Director where he continued private practice as well as teaching and staffing residents. Dr. Neal was promoted Program Director in 1995, where he dedicated the rest of his career to the teaching of Family Physicians.
Dr. Neal was an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at I.U. School of Medicine and an Adjunct Professor of Physiology and Health Science at Ball State Univ. Dr. Neal was a Diplomat of the American Board of Family Practice and held memberships in the American Medical Association, American Academy of Family Physicians, Society of Teachers of Family Medicine, Indiana State Medical Association, the Academy of Family Physicians and the Delaware-Blackford County Medical Society.
Survivors include: Loving wife of 22 years, Sandra Neal; one son, Taylor Neal; two daughters, Autumn Neal and Allison Neal, all at home; mother, Wilma Neal of Yorktown, IN; two sisters, Patricia Whittemore (fiance-Jerry Gale) of Muncie, and Marsha Brunett (husband Dr. Jeff Brunett) of Indianapolis; close cousin, Dr. Matthew Neal (wife-Alexis), of Muncie; along with several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Harold G. Neal.
Visitation for Dr. Neal will be Thursday, March 18th from 4-8 p.m. at Parson Mortuary and one hour prior to services at the Church.
Services will be held at New Life Presbyterian Church at 8000 W. River Road, Yorktown, on Friday, March 19th at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Richard Ehresman and Dr. Jim Spiegel officiating. Burial will be in Beech Grove Cemetery.
