Young Julian was a seaman on USS Cyclops, a Proteus-class collier. The ship and 306 crew and passengers disappeared some time after Mar 4, 1918. The US Navy finally notified families In June of 1918 that their loved ones were no longer missing but presumed dead. No wreckage or remains were ever recovered. The ship's captain emigrated from Germany to San Francisco and there was some speculation after war broke out that his sympathies were with Germany and not his new home in the United States and he may have colluded with Germany. Also could have been a rogue wave. No one knows.

He never married.
