Douglas resident Phyllis Mae Lewis died Monday, June 2, at Bartlett Regional Hospital. She was 80.
Born May 17, 1929, in Eureka, Kan., to William Robert Clarence "Brownie" Lewis and Edra Leo McArron Lewis, she was raised on a ranch with five brothers.
Phyllis graduated with honors in 1975 from Emporia State University in Emporia, Kan. After college, she moved to Alaska to be one of a small group of elite women environmental inspectors on the TransAlaska Pipeline. She made Douglas her home around 1982 and never left.
She loved rocks, birds, books and flowers. She was master gardener with both flowers and her vegetable garden, her family said. She also was a history buff and loved to talk about politics.
She was a staunch supporter of the Second Amendment and a lifetime member of the NRA, which she often said was one of her greatest and proudest accomplishments in life.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Donnie Lewis; and son, William "Scott" Lewis.
She is survived by three children, Chris Lewis and wife, Deanna, of Juneau, Rachel Adams and husband, Gus, of Douglas, Joleen Parisien and husband, Pete, of Juneau, and foster daughter, Deanna Miller and husband, Craig Ditzler, of San Diego; brothers, Robert Lewis, of Yuma, Ariz., Pat Lewis, of Wenachtee, Wash., Jim Lewis, of Elfin Cove, and Mike Lewis, of Cabool, Mo.; and 12 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 6, at her son Chris Lewis' home, 8193 Threadneedle St., Juneau, AK 99824. In lieu of flowers the family asks that a donation be made to the NRA or Douglas Senior Center. Condolences may be sent to the Lewis family at the above address.
