Edvardus King was the son of Eliab King and Silence Shaw of North Yarmouth. He was born in England and moved to America with his parents and his brother as a small boy. His parents died two years after their arrival here and Edvardus and his brother were raised by foster families. He lost touch with his brother. He was raised by a family named Rideout in Cumberland, Maine. He had at least nine children with his first wife Dorothy or Dolly (Hicks) King. She died in 1826 and he later married Eleanor Pennell.
